MODEL HISTORY:
The Lamborghini Gallardo was launched in 2003 (with production ending in 2013) and was the most successful model in the history of the company. With the help of parent company Audi, the Gallardo became the most usable and reliable model to ever leave the Sant'Agata factory - not to mention the most successful, with a total of 14,022 examples produced. Named after a famous breed of fighting bull, the V10-powered Gallardo was Lamborghini's stable-mate to a succession of V12 flagship models. It was a landmark model too, the first genuinely all-new car to be made by Sant'Agata under Audi ownership and also marked a return for the firm to making a more affordable, usable super sports car, something it hadn't done since the Jalpa went out of production in 1988.
The Gallardo has a light but stiff aluminium spaceframe, aluminium panels and a mid-mounted 5.0-litre V10 powering all four wheels on demand through a six-speed manual gearbox or a six-speed E-gear paddle-shift auto. In 2007 at the Geneva Motor Show Lamborghini unveiled a lightened and more powerful version of the model named the Gallardo Superleggera. With the use of carbon fibre, a massive 100kg was saved and an improved intake, exhaust an ECU meant total power output was increased to 523 bhp. In total, only 618 Superleggera models were produced making them rare and desirable.
EQUIPMENT
The car was fitted with a reverse camera and lift gear. As a Superleggera, it's fitted with a carbon spoiler, side skirts, diffuser, wing mirrors, door cards, centre console, steering wheel bottom, and bucket seats unique to this limited-edition model.
EXTERIOR & WHEELS
Presented in Pearlescent/Metallic Yellow (Colour Giallo Midas), it is undeniably the most desirable factory colour and a highlight of the car. The exterior has the limited edition “Superleggera” touches such as the rear carbon aero spoiler, carbon fibre side skirts, carbon fibre diffuser and carbon fibre wing mirrors.
The vinyl decal along the sides easily distinguish this lightweight special from the standard Gallardo. The engine cover is also made from carbon, as is the fixed rear wing, complete with reversing camera. The engine cover’s glass window is the factory transparent polycarbonate, while the rear window is made from similarly lightweight Macrolon from factory. Pop the engine cover release and raise it aloft and you can feel the difference, the lid flying up with minimal effort.
The wheels are the very special thin-spoke ‘Skorpious’ rims, which are forged from magnesium for minimal unsprung weight. Proof of the engineer’s fixation with weight-loss can also be found in the titanium wheel nuts, which clamp the lightweight alloy wheels to lighter but stronger wheel hubs.
INTERIOR
To climb inside the interior of this wonderfully kept example is a real treat. The special factory fitted and super rare Alcantara bucket seats are fantastic to look at and sit in. The factory yellow stitched seats come with the ‘Superleggera’ logos. Close the doors with the special carbon fibre clad door cards and you notice the centre surround and steering wheel which are again unique to this model and have carbon fibre used extensively. Factory alloy pedals and factory yellow stitched floor mats set off the interior nicely.
ENGINE
The Gallardo Superleggera has the epic 5.0 V10 derived from the standard Gallardo but with a host of touches. The engine itself develops more power – 522 bhp, thanks to a new ECU, the mapping of which extracted the extra bhp at higher revs without hurting the torque output. New intake and exhaust manifolds were developed for this model, along with a new, reduced-back-pressure exhaust system, all of which saved weight and boosted performance.
The stubby tailpipes jutting from the car’s rear are a signature Superleggera item, the happy by-product is a blood-curdling war cry when revved.
